A five-year, multi-stage greening project along the Warriparri (Sturt River) has come to an end, with around 10,000 more local indigenous plants now in the ground, creating new habitats for native birds, butterflies, and lizards.

The project, funded by Council and Green Adelaide, kicked off in 2019 with the greening of Stewart Avenue, Bob Lewis and Fordham reserves. The last section at Shannon Avenue Reserve in Glenelg North was completed this winter.

Council staff, contractors, residents and volunteers from the Friends of Sturt River Landcare Group have worked together at Shannon Avenue to plant more than 2,500 indigenous species, including 17 river red gums trees.

Several TreeNet inlets were also installed, harvesting stormwater runoff to provide additional water for the river red gums, which will grow to provide cooling shade and habitat in the future.
