Council's City Assets team has been working diligently over the past 18 months, upgrading 15 bus stops and another 112 kerb pram ramps to ensure they meet Disability Discrimination Act standards.

Improvements to the bus stops include the installation of standing pads that allow buses to lower the access ramp, and tactiles which help people with sight limitations determine where to hail a bus from.

The upgrades were listed in the Disability and Access Inclusion Plan annual progress report of initiatives tabled at last week’s Council meeting.

Other initiatives to enhance disability access and inclusion across council services included:

  • The expansion of library services to include sensory story times
  • The use of Universal Design elements at the new Seacliff amenities block and upgraded former Buffalo site
  • The provision of more accessible parking spaces, toilets, a designated drop-off zone and a sensory zone at the 2024 Glenelg Christmas Pageant
  • The placement of 17 volunteers with disabilities across various council programs

The City of Holdfast Bay has also joined with the cities of Marion and Mitcham to create the Tri-Council Disability Advisory Network to further provide essential advice on projects and services to enhance community inclusivity.
