For the past five years, the Friends of Minda Dunes volunteers have been caring for a three-hectare patch of the dunes and surrounds.

The group meets weekly to weed and water around 10,000 plants reintroduced to the site as part of the Coast Path development.

They also care for site’s established trees, among them this drooping sheoak which now bears the Tree of the Month medallion for December.

The tree is visible along the Minda Coast Path at the start of the pathway leading to the Minda Inc. café.

Estimated to be around 18 years old, the tree is a South Australian native and would have been naturally occurring across the hind dunes along the coastline before colonisation, when the dunes were much wider than they currently are.

The tree’s seeds are also an important food source for yellow-tailed black cockatoos, which are considered an endangered species.

The Friends of Minda Dunes group came together five years ago and meets weekly—rain, hail, or shine—to care for their patch of the world.

Entirely volunteer based, they’re always looking for new members, and you can find out more by emailing friendsofmindadunes@gmail.com
