February Tree of the Month is a family favourite
For the Grinham family, this tree in William Kibby Reserve at Glenelg North has long been a favourite – and continues to be loved and enjoyed.
“I used to live two doors down so this is where all the community kids would go… there was all grass here and we used to play chasey around it,” said Ashley, whose own children now love the tree as much as he did.
“It’s grown quite a bit in 25-30 years and there’s probably an engraving on the tree with my family’s name on it.”
Ashley nominated the tree, which is a Ficus pladypoda or rock fig, to be our Tree of the Month for February.
His kids Lola, Teddy and their friends Lexi and Callie had the honour of wrapping the blue sash around it – before getting back to the important task of playing.
“They love to have a swing from it and someone’s added a monkey bar to it.. I like the fact that everyone used to engrave their name on it, and it’s got some character and a story to tell,” Ashley said.
The tree is estimated to be around 60 years old and today boasts an impressive canopy that spans 15 metres.
