Dog owners reminded to take responsibility for their pets

Leash up, for dog’s sake.

That’s the message from the Dog and Cat Management Board which states that most dog attacks are reported to councils when dogs are off-leash.

Last year, more than 500 people were hospitalised for dog bite trauma.

In Holdfast Bay, dogs need to be on a leash at all times in shared spaces, including our footpaths.

They can exercised off-leash on the beach or in our reserves, but they need to be under effective control – that means they respond to voice commands and do not harass people or other animals.

Dog owners are also reminded that it is their responsibility to clean up after their pets in all public places, including the beach.

Dog poo bag dispensers can be found at 52 different locations across Holdfast Bay with many along the Esplanade and Coast Park.

Residents can also purchase a roll of 300 compostable bags from the Brighton Civic Centre and Glenelg Library at a cost of $15.75 for each roll.

At this time of year, owners will also receive their dog and cat renewal notices.

All cats must also be microchipped and that number recorded on the Dogs and Cats online register.
