In 1836, Glenelg was the landing place for the first settlement on mainland South Australia. Intrinsically linked to the colonisation of South Australia, the Patawalonga to the north of Glenelg's Moseley Square is the site of some of the first interactions between colonists and the Kaurna People of the Adelaide Plains.

Glenelg's old town was designed by Colonel William Light, whose design for the City of Adelaide is considered by many to be a prototype for an ideal city plan. With the focal point of Jetty Road Glenelg, by the 1940s, the shopping strip had morphed into the 'golden half mile' of boutiques and local businesses it remains known for today.
