Supported Accessible Beach Days allow wheelchair users and people with mobility challenges to safely access the beach. Beach matting will be laid out to provide access to the water's edge, and beach wheelchairs, including the Mobi-Chair® and Sandcruiser® are available for bookings.

Volunteers from both estara and the City of Holdfast Bay will be on hand throughout the day to provide information and support.

Location

Everyone deserves to enjoy our beaches. Accessible Beach Days are designed to support people with disabilities and others with mobility challenges to access our beaches safely.

Beach matting will provide access to the water’s edge.

Two Mobi-Chair® floating beach wheelchairs and a Sandcruiser® beach wheelchair will be available, subject to bookings.

This partnership is between Council and estara (formerly known as PQSA).

A total of six Accessible Beach Days will be held in Glenelg this summer, from 10am – 2pm. They will be held on the following dates:

  • Sunday 12 January 2025
  • Saturday 25 January 2025
  • Sunday 9 February 2025
  • Saturday 22 February 2025
  • Friday 7 March 2025
  • Saturday 22 March 2025

The event will take place on Glenelg Beach, immediately north of the Glenelg Jetty. The access point is located at the beach ramp and will be clearly marked with signage and marquees.

The event is open to anyone and is free to attend. The beach-mat is accessible to everyone attending.

Bookings are required to try the Mobi-Chair® and Sandcruiser® beach wheelchairs.

Yes, if you wish to use a beach wheelchair. There are three beach wheelchairs available to book for one-hour time slots. While additional chairs may be available on the day, bookings are strongly recommended to avoid disappointment.

Please bring swimwear, a towel, and sun protection. Marquees will provide some shade on the sand. If you plan to use the equipment or access the water, a support person is recommended. If you require a lifter, please bring your own sling.

Please note, the lifter has a 150 kg capacity.

Chair transfers requiring a lifter will take place at the nearby Glenelg Community Centre. Please remember to bring your own sling. The lifter capacity is 150 kg.

People who are able to weight-bear and walk may get out and swim. However, those with limited mobility may face challenges, as there is no method to lift individuals back into the chairs in shallow water or on the sand.

Yes, participants can use the drop-off zone immediately west of the Glenelg Rotunda, near Brian Nadilo Reserve. Vehicles access this zone via Colley Terrace.

Please note: This is a shared pedestrian and vehicle space. Drivers must proceed with care and have hazard lights on when approaching. The maximum approach speed is 10 km per hour.

Our current focus is providing accessible beach equipment at patrolled beaches during peak summer months when demand is highest. The City of Holdfast Bay, in partnership with estara, is also exploring a self-serve model for the equipment, with a trial planned for the 2025/26 summer season. This initiative is part of our broader Disability Access & Inclusion efforts to identify suitable patrolled beaches for offering accessible equipment on a more permanent basis.

Yes, Seacliff Beach also offers accessible beach options during summer. Thanks to the efforts of Seacliff Surf Life Saving Club volunteers, an accessible beach mat is rolled out every weekend during the patrol season (October to April).

The mat is set up close to the Seacliff patrol tower from 12pm on Saturdays and remains out until 6pm on Sundays and on Public Holidays. Three water wheelchairs are available for free use. Bookings can be made via the Seacliff Surf Life Saving Club website.
