Kitty Whyte

This sculpture is a memorial work to acknowledge Kathleen Duncan Campbell known as Kitty Whyte. Kitty lived on Yadkanulka Station, north of Port Augusta with her family. She would return to Brighton annually for the summer and taught the children of Brighton to swim. At the conclusion of one of her classes in 1926, Kitty dived from the Brighton Jetty and was fatally attacked by a large shark. Kitty was buried in the St. Judes Cemetery Brighton in the family plot.

Catching Squid

The ‘Catching Squid’ artworks are nestled on the rocks near the Brighton Jetty. Adding an element of interest and surprise to passers-by, the bronze squids are a subtle addition to the Brighton Esplanade sitting proudly on the rock wall with the beach backdrop.
The artwork was created by Artist Gilbert Richardson with funding from a City of Holdfast Bay and the Sophia Naismith Foundation.
