Accessible beach days are back this summer
Glenelg Beach will host a series of accessible beach days in the coming months, taking to six the total number of accessible beach events held this summer.
Council is working with ParaQuad SA (PQSA) to host the beach days and will provide 50 metres of beach matting from the foreshore to the water, to provide access for wheelchair users and people with mobility difficulties.
There will also be beach wheelchairs available to use on the days and the Mobi-chair floating wheelchair. PQSA volunteers will be on hand throughout the day to provide support.
The next five accessible beach days will be held between 10am – 2pm on the following dates:
- Sunday 7 January 2024
- Saturday 20 January 2024
- Saturday 3 February 2024
- Sunday 18 February 2024
- Sunday 10 March 2024
The access point can be found north of the Glenelg Jetty, providing entry to Glenelg Beach, which will be fully wheelchair accessible.
As with the previously accessible beach days held over the past two summers, the beach mat is accessible to everyone, including members of the public and people attending the events.
The beach wheelchairs and Mobi-chair floating wheelchair are free to use and bookings are recommended.
Seacliff Beach is home to another accessible beach mat every weekend in summer, thanks to the Seacliff Surf Life Saving Club volunteers.
During the patrol season, from October to April, volunteer patrols roll out the mat just south of the Seacliff patrol tower from 12pm on Saturdays and it remains until 6pm on Sundays.
Three water wheelchairs are also available to use free of charge. Bookings can be made via the Seacliff SLSC website.
